About Improve Their Lives
We are a non-profit charity founded in 2015 by two Canadians who aspire to keep things "small," yet impactful, spontaneous, engaging, and authentic. Our mission is to find sustainable ways to help people who face difficulties in life and enable them to become self-sufficient. There is no shortage of opportunities to help people in need. That’s the inspiration behind our name – an encouragement (and reminder) to improve someone’s life.
What We Do
For five years, we have focused on building sustainability through education – teaching English to children in a Cambodian village with the hope of increasing their chances of employment. Although sustainability is aspirational, the program required rigorous efforts to govern and manage overseas, not to mention the ongoing out-of-pocket operating costs. The pandemic halted many activities around the world, and our education program was one of them. Check out our education journey.
As we evaluate reinvigorating the education program, we want to pilot other impactful ways to help people in need through our #BringASmile initiatives. These initiatives will focus on meeting the immediate needs of those who face difficulties in life, and the new model will rely on crowdfunding and increased social media presence. Who We Are
Mark, who has Slovenian and Austrian heritage, was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. Thai was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and immigrated to Toronto, Ontario with his family in December 1991. Both sets of parents were factory workers (and at times holding multiple jobs). We are IT (Mark) and HR (Thai) professionals in big corporations.
We both share a passion for traveling to explore other cultures and build connections with local communities. During our travels, we often seek moments to provide random acts of kindness to people who face difficulties in life, whether it’s treating someone to a meal at a restaurant, buying groceries or giving money to families who are struggling, handing out school supplies, or visiting orphanages and bringing toys and essential items to the shelters.
We are very thankful to have the opportunity to help people in need. And we aspire to encourage more people to do the same to improve lives in whatever means they can.
