Visit to Madu School in Nepal
12/6/2024
In the previous blog, we initially set out with the goal of bringing heartwarming smiles to underfunded orphanages in impoverished areas of Nepal. However, during our travels, we met several Nepali individuals who helped us better understand the economic challenges facing different regions of the country. They introduced us to the Achham District in the western part of Nepal - a rural and remote area where subsistence farming is the norm and the need for support is even more pressing. After thoughtful discussions, we were inspired by the idea of focusing our efforts on schools in this region.
With the donations we received, we were able to purchase school supplies and even a couple of volleyballs for the students. Our first stop was Madu Vidhyalaya (Madu School), which had the highest concentration of marginalized students facing systemic barriers related to caste, gender, and socio-economic status.
From Lumbini (birthplace of Lord Buddha), we took an overnight bus to Surkhet. In Surkhet, the Nepali individuals inquired with several wholesalers to compare prices of school supplies and were lucky enough to find a humble and patient vendor who was kind enough to arrange tuk-tuks to transport us and the school supplies back to our hotel. From Surkhet, we took an 8-hour mini-van ride through windy and narrow roads to reach Achham.
When we finally arrived at Madu School, we were welcomed with garlands of flowers by the school administrators. As we distributed the school supplies, the smiles on the students' faces touched our hearts deeply. This moment made us realize the incredible impact we could have, and we were inspired to expand our efforts with #BringASmile to Nepal "2.0". Our goal now is to ensure that students have consistent access to school supplies every year, so they can focus on their education without the added worry of affordability.
A huge and heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to our early donors. Your generosity provided the students with the supplies they needed for the rest of the current school year, and your support made a lasting difference.
We are excited to continue the journey with #BringASmile Nepal 2.0 with school supplies and invite everyone to join us in providing school supplies for the students of Madu School.
