We did it - 2 chapters done

5/12/2018

When we introduced the three levels of English classes, we knew we wanted to go beyond just "textbook" learning. We envisioned a curriculum that not only taught English but also equipped the students with practical job-readiness skills. Recognizing that hospitality, restaurant, and tourism were booming industries in Cambodia, we reached out to our friends for help in creating a more hands-on, practical curriculum for the advanced class. It was important to keep the advanced students engaged and challenged as they worked through their regular English lessons rather quickly and efficiently.

Without a moment’s hesitation, our friends stepped up, embracing the challenge of designing and planning the curriculum with remarkable enthusiasm and collaboration. We had set out to create three chapters — one on working in a guesthouse, one on working in a restaurant, and one on working as a tour guide.

What followed was amazing teamwork. From brainstorming the curriculum to putting ideas on paper and finalizing the designs, it took us about 2.5 months to complete each chapter. And through it all, we were driven by a shared passion for the cause.

Our team couldn't have been more perfect for the task:

  • Mark, Nick and Thai focused on developing the content, working tirelessly to brainstorm the structure of each chapter and then drafting the text.

  • Danny brought the material to life with his illustrations, adding a visual layer that made the lessons even more engaging.

  • Christine, with her editing profession, handled the end-to-end design, seamlessly pulling everything together and giving the chapters a polished, cohesive look.

Despite our busy 9-5 jobs, we dedicated our evenings and weekends to work on the curriculum. The effort was truly a labour of love.

When the first chapter was finally printed, we were all filled with pride, overcome with joy. It was a beautiful reminder of what true friendship, collaboration and genuine contribution can achieve.
