Turning a Vacation Into Impact: #BringASmile to Nepal
Sometimes the most meaningful journeys begin in the most unexpected ways.
Just as our earlier trip to Cambodia sparked the creation of an English learning program there, a routine vacation once again turned into an opportunity to improve lives - this time in Nepal.
Through the #BringASmile to Nepal project, we raised $5,000 CAD to support students at a public school in western Nepal with school supplies for the entire year.
This impact was only possible because of the generosity of donors who believed in the mission (even knowing that tax receipts could not be issued). These donors didn’t just give school supplies.
They gave confidence.
They gave dignity.
They gave hope.
Each supply kit was filled with essentials like pencils, pens, notebooks, and colouring pencils and became more than just materials for school. For many students, it became a reason to show up, stay engaged, and feel proud to learn.
This year brought unexpected challenges. Public schools across Nepal opened much later than usual due to the nationwide teachers' strike that lasted nearly a month. But when Madu School finally re-opened in mid-May, students were welcomed with their supply kits - a small gesture that made a big difference.
And it doesn't stop there. We've ensured that additional supplies are available throughout the year so school supplies can be replinished as they run out. This helps ensure that learning continues without interruption and that students are never held back by a lack of basic tools.
And here's a message from the school principal:
"म विद्यालयका प्रधानाध्यापकको तर्फबाट तपाईँलाई धन्यवाद दिन चाहन्छु। गरिब विद्यार्थीहरूलाई उपलब्ध गराएको स्टेसनरीले उनीहरूको अध्ययनमा ठूलो सहयोग पुग्नेछ। तपाईँको यो सहयोग प्रशंसनीय छ र हामी यसको सधैं कदर गर्नेछौं।" / "I would like to thank you on behalf of the school principal. The stationery provided to the poor students will be of great help in their studies. Your support is commendable and we will always appreciate it."– Statement from Sham Dhami, School Principal.
